OBITUARY

MR ANDREW PETRIE, BANKER, KEMNAY.

Mr Andrew Petrie, banker and retired merchant, Kemnay, died at Kemnay on Saturday morning.  He had been in failing health for some years.  The immediate cause of death was paralysis and complications.  Mr Petrie who was a native of Kennethmont served his apprenticeship with Mr James Howie, merchant, Huntly.  Afterwards he proceeded to Aberdeen, and had not been there long when he started business as a grocer on his own account at the Green.  Mr Petrie was well known in musical circles in the city.  For many years he acted as precentor in the Free High Church, and subsequently he became an office bearer in the Free South Church, where his ungrudging services – musical and otherwise- were greatly appreciated.  Thirty-one years ago the deceased left Aberdeen for Kemnay, where he commenced business as a general merchant.  Mr Petrie, with commendable enterprise and energy, had built up an extensive and successful business, in the conduct of which three of his sons had been associated with him for several years past.  For twenty-four years Mr Petrie had been agent of the Kemnay branch of the Town and County Bank.  He took a leading part in the public affairs of Kemnay and district, having been for many years a prominent member of the School Board and Parish Council.  He was recognised as a wise administrator, and every scheme that aimed at the social betterment of the community received his hearty support.  Mr Petrie was secretary of the Kemnay Hall Company for about a quarter of a century, and for a similar period he was precentor in the Free Church.  No one took greater interest in, or rendered more help to, the religious, social, and commercial interests of the village than Mr Petrie.

Several years ago the deceased acquired the business at Monymusk which had been carried on by Mr Skinner, and worked at it in conjunction with the Kemnay business.  About three years ago he retired, and the business at both Kemnay and Monymusk has been carried on by three of his sons.  Mr Petrie, who was a Liberal in politics, is survived by Mrs Petrie and a family of five sons and one daughter.  Robert, one of the sons, is teller in the Market Street branch of the Town and County Bank, Aberdeen.
